3 Tips to Increase Your Twitter Followers

Jun 16, 2015

We’ve shared best practices for Facebook, but did you know over 500,000,000 tweets are sent each day?

If you believe Twitter is one of the best social media platforms for your business, you’re right. Twitter has over 302,000,000 active users, and many of our clients are using it to engage with their target markets.

Like every social media platform, one of the first steps is to grow your following. Here are three tips to increase your Twitter followers:

  1. Post both quality AND quantity content.

People are not going to follow an account that tweets about topics they are not interested in, or posts only sales-related content. Think about your target market, and create quality content that your audience is interested in.

But unlike some other forms of writing, with Twitter, it’s not just about quality. Studies have shown that the more you tweet, the more followers you’re likely to have. We recommend tweeting a minimum of three times per week — but even better if you can make it three times a day!

  1. Reach the low-hanging fruit first.

Your clients and prospects are always your best audience. Don’t look elsewhere for followers until you make sure you have connected with the people you already know.

At a minimum, add social media icons to your website and your email signature. You may want to even add your Twitter handle to your business cards.

Additionally, there is a lot you can do with your email list. Make sure you export the email addresses of your LinkedIn connections and add these to your email database. You can then send an email asking people to follow you on your social media accounts, and/or import your email contacts to Twitter and follow them hoping they follow you in return.

  1. Follow the followers of Twitter users similar to yourself.

It’s human psychology that when someone follows you, you’ll consider following them back – especially if they have a lot of followers and appear to be an authority of a subject in which you’re interested.

Create a list of the top 10 Twitter users who are either similar to you or have a following that you are interested in targeting. You can use a low-cost software such as ManageFlitter to automatically follow and unfollow the people following those 10 users according to a schedule you set.

While this can be a highly effective tactic, it does take a significant amount of setup to create the right schedule. We can help streamline the process for you and get you on track to steadily increasing those Twitter followers.
